2012 Portage College Annual Round Dance (5:00 PM - 9:00 PM)
On Saturday, March 10, Portage College will be celebrating our community spirit with an Annual Round Dance, to be held at Craigend Hall, a large, convenient location to hold the celebration, being central to several of our communities. Families are most welcome and encouraged to attend.
This dance is different from a Memorial Round Dance which is an event hosted by the family to recognize and pay tribute to someone who has passed away. The event will begin with the Pipe Ceremony at 5pm.
Delicious Food
The food is prepared on the day of the Round Dance and provisions are made to feed approximately 400 people. The Blessing of the food is our acknowledgement that the Creator has provided us with the food. The Round Dance is the dance of the spirits. The meal is held in honor of the dead. It is blessed so the Spirits can eat as well.
The host requests that the Elders and all visitors from afar eat first. The College leaders serve the Elders as a sign of respect. The four main Elders are the ones who pray for the Round Dance participants and on behalf of the college.
Pipe Ceremony
During the Pipe Ceremony, participants give thanks to the Creator for allowing all to be present. Grandfathers and grandmothers are asked to attend the event to honor us with their presence so all who attend can enjoy themselves. All males can attend the Pipe Ceremony. Youth under 18 must have permission from their parents.
Special Dances
The Dance moves in a clockwise direction. We hold hands and dance in a circle just like the winds, and the rising and setting of the sun and moon.
The Special Dances are just for fun! The Sweetheart dance was started as a courtship dance. The Apple Dance was started during a time when it was a real treat to receive an apple. Still around now, the dance still guarantees an apple that's given as a snack to take home. The Friendship dance is used to give extra financial help to a friend. Ask a person to dance and give them $20, just for fun!
Drummers
The drummers come from all over Alberta and Saskatchewan. There is NO age limit and the skill level is not important, should you wish to participate. All drummers are welcome, no matter what your culture, race, religion or age!! Drummers are paid based on the proceeds collected from the sale of 50-50 tickets. The money is divided evenly among the participating drummers.
Dress Code
There is no dress code but all college employees and their families are asked to wear some article of clothing that identifies the college.
Giveaway
A giveaway is also held during the event to show respect for people who have attended. It also shows the host's appreciation to guests for participating in the Dance.

2nd Annual ATB Financial Young Artists Competition (5:00 PM)
ATB Financial is pleased to announce the second annual ATB Financial Young Artists Competition as part of our continuing partnership with the Art Gallery of Alberta (AGA).
You are cordially invited to attend a special showcase of art created by the Grade 4 students from the Northern Lights School Division. The 30 best submissions chosen from across the province will be professionally framed and featured in the spring of 2012 in an exhibition at the Art Gallery of Alberta in Edmonton.
The ATB Financial Grade 4 Art Showcase will be held on
Wednesday, March 14th between 5 and 7 PM
in the ATB Financial building at 10039 101 St. in Lac La Biche, Alberta.
Snacks and refreshments will be provided.

In 2012, L'ACFA is please to combine Plamondon's ever popular "Cabane à Sucre" with the annual “HOCKEY EN FÊTE” (Provincial French Hockey Tournament). In 2012 new family oriented activities will be presented throught the weekend, and the people of our community will have the opportunity to cheer for their children, cousins, teachers, co-workers, parents or even grand-parents playing on the ice.
