Some of the highest-quality lakes, beaches and shorelines in Alberta are found in Lakeland Provincial Park and Recreation Area. Kinnaird, Jackson and Blackett lakes, accessible from the Mile 10 staging area, make an excellent canoe circuit. Lakeland is home to more than 200 species of birds, as well as a diverse range of boreal forest mammals.

Lakeland Provincial Park and Recreation Area occupies more than 58,000 hectares (143,000 acres) of majestic wilderness. Lakeland is one of Alberta's newest provincial parks, created in 1992. Within this mixed-wood boreal forest, you will discover walking trails leading to glacial lakes with sandy beaches, fishing, backcountry canoe routes, and numerous species of birds, orchids and wildlife (Bald Eagles, Osprey, and various owls to name a few).

Lakeland also includes the historic Mosquito Lake Trail, now referred to as the Shaw Lake Trail. This trail was used by explorers, fur traders and natives over 100 years ago. This trail, and others, provides for backcountry camping, hiking and cross country skiing. Lakeland is home to four main campgrounds: Touchwood, Pinehurst, Seibert, and Ironwood.

Cairns

The lakes in Lakeland Provincial Park and Recreation Area, as well as other lakes east of the Lac La Biche, are home to several cairns honouring Canada's fallen airmen, heroes of the military and of Canada. In the 1950s the Canadian Board on Geographical Names, as it was then known, began to name unnamed lakes for fallen service men of World War II.
